in the db i have added Jurgen Klinsman and a few other managers in charge of the right teams (bayern, nigeria et al) yet when i load a game the jobs are available? i cannot understand why

Stupid questions, but did you actually save the database changes, and did you date the appointments to take effect at the start of the game or at the real dates?

Have you try going back to the editor and check Klinsman's and other's retirement date?
I have tried the same thing as well, and found out that Klinsman had set his retirement as soon as a new game started i.e. 2007

I'm pretty sure the problem here is that they are set to manage two clubs. Make sure the managers you have changed are managing one club or one nation only.
