I always play with a DM who sometimes moves up to MC during a game.
He has to be my rock, as hes the anchor to every attack and is usually my captain.
So I would have as Drunk said, with Determined, strength, tackling and good passing.

Determination and Work Rate are together to cut down opponents attack.
I'm surprised nobody above talked about work rate.
Then you'd need a good stamina for ball chaser.
Tackling, strength are plus for defending
Passing, off the ball, creativity would help for organizing attack
It really depends on who are you playing against and playing away or at home.

If it boiled down to such a simplistic dilemma, I'd go for determination. It's a crucial attribute for any player, but perhaps none more so than your defensive midfielder.

Why dont you post screenshots of the players your looking at. That way we can see how fair apart the stats are? Helping to advise better?

Depends on the players you have... If you need someone to spread passes around like Pirlo does for Milan, you'd need the talented one.
If you need someone who's just there to stop the balls and be an extra defender, the determined one would be better I suppose, alá makelele.
