In currently playing in the Russian league as Amkar and in 2009 you're only allowed 5 foreigners in the first 11.

But when I sub off (in the middle of a match that is) a Russian player and try to replace him with a foreigner (if I already had 5 foreigners on the pitch) the game doesn't allow me. A message pops up saying that I'm only allowed 5 foreigners in the first 11. But surely I should be allowed to, because the first 11 are the starting 11 right?

Even after making a sub, your first eleven is still your first eleven. I think it's just an expression, rather than "the first eleven players".

Then they could at least say "a maximum of 5 foreigners on the pitch at the same time" because that's a lot easier to understand :p

Haha, yes you're very correct. "First eleven" doesn't sound very official. More like something a commentator would say!
