I've found the best way to avoid most managerial stress in this game - I set my lineups, start the game, then quickly go on vacation for a day, and bang on the return from vacation button as quickly as possible. If I win, I watch the highlights; if I lose, on to the next game.
Like another poster here, I enjoy assembling the team and finding players. I'd rather let my assistant do most of the in-game tactical stuff (especially because he's there for the whole game like the AI manager). I feel this is better than watching key plays and trying to adjust tactics based on that.
Also, with extremely long and tiring seasons (like a Blue Square Premier season of 46 games and 4 cup tournaments), the season can actually move along a little bit. My teams have been very successful with this method.
