i have players injured for only 2 months and they have totally lost it, i have had to move on my former best player a couple of times because he went down so much due to injury. i have only played 3 seasons as well so i suspect this is a common occurence

Make sure you bring them back slowly through reserves games and sub appearances. If they get out on a pitch at the start having been injured for two months, of course they're going to be pretty bad - probably they won't even have been running. And have patience waiting for the stats to go back up.
