This season was a better experience on every count. Expecting another season of misery, heartache and wild despair (and I play this game to relax??) I was worried when early season form pointed the way of another relegation dogfight, but results improved and a few shrewd young signings moulded well with my young squad to start showing some of the potential I had hoped for. Things were making sense and players were finding their feet and confidence. My ex-Gillingham striker continued to plough the lone furrow up front and bagged a respectable 22 from 40. Confidence newly restored, I ended the days of wild formation changes and gung-ho lunacy had reverted to the tactics that had served me so well previously but had seemingly been found out the season before. I finished 12th, never troubling the promotion mix but also comfortably evading the melee at the foot of the table with a good 6 weeks to spare. 12th was where I finished in my first season in league one, but the similarities end there. This season I reached 12th on an upward spiral, a team gelling and looking more compact. 2 seasons previous, the slump which had seen me fall out of play-off contention to 12th had been a portent of the diabolical season to follow, this year, despite it being an unspectacular season, things are looking up for next year. I feel we have consolidated in this league.
Legendary striker has re-emerged and started finding the net again, although restricted to the role of impact player / super sub.
In the close season, Sheffield Wednesday, stagnant and in need of a rebuild but in the Championship approach me. Another tough decision awaits.......
Final Position: 12th, voted overachievers.
