In 2002 when Airdrieonians went bust they were replaced in Division 3 by Gretna.
Clydebank FC were reaching the end of their short existence, formed in 1965, and were bought by the literally non-existent Airdrie United, who had shown they had enough money to come second to Gretna in the ballot for entry.
Clydebank were renamed, relocated and Airdrie United took their place in Division 2, leapfrogging Gretna who started in Division 3.
Gretna, although based in Scotland, had been playing in the English pyramid system since 1947 and had no right to gain entry to the Scottish League.
