Well, i live in Brazil, pretty nasty things happen down here, like 12 year old kids working as slaves in mines in the north....
But what I mean, in democratic countires everyone has the right to work wherever they want. They cannot be forced to do anything. If that was the case, Brazil would probably have a league as good as the premiership, cause our players wouldn't flee to countries like greece and ukraine... </BLOCKQUOTE>
Players can and do hold out to force a trade and so forth. Also, I think you will find that in Brazil, there are multiple industries where there are contracts that have non-compete clauses that prevent someone from taking a job in the same industry with a competitor.
Players aren't forced to play for a club, they just can't play for any other club in a league that has reciprocal agreements - the NHL agreement on transfer payments with European leagues just lapsed.
The net effect is that it is tougher on smaller clubs - hence relevance to LLM. You can't easily compete with Real Madrid, even if you have the same bank balance. Puts the cratering of a team like Leeds with a strong fan base and wide recognition into perspective.
Oddly, buying and selling players almost never happens in North American leagues. </BLOCKQUOTE>
I understand it now. I see most of the player transfers in U.S.A. are trades, and it works in a very different way, probably mainly because of the franchise system.
Re-reading my post, I thought it could give the impression that I was being offensive towards the US. That was not my intention at all. The only reason I brought this up its because every now and then here in Brazil
ppl talk about creating a rule, such as minimum age or years of playing here before going abroad, to prevent us from losing our talented players...but we cannot do that because its against our constitution...
Sorry for going further off topic!
