So it's not just the English leagues, then. I've run a few holiday games to see how the league looks after 20 years or so, and usually the big teams have fallen down to League 1 or 2 by then. Not sure how that happens, really.
The only thing I saw is that they have grounds with high maintenance costs and loan debts.
Maybe a bad season (no European appearance) can trigger financial problems, so they sell their best players and are not able to replace them?
I can't think of anything else. The smaller Bundesliga teams (Leverkusen, Hannover, Wolfsburg, Bochum, Karlsruhe etc.) are staying comfortably in top flight.
The big clubs were first against the wall when the revolution came! (well, after the marketing division of the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation, of course)
Seriously, I don't think there's any logical reason behind their demise. Maybe inept management, the signing of bad players, subsequently low attendances etc. contrived to make hell for them. Haven't they built new stadiums or expanded the old ones considerably?
The game seems fairer than real life in not distingushing so called elite clubs who believe that it their divine right to be in the Chammpions League every season.
It is not just a German league phenom, the Spanish La Liga is always full of smaller teams with 20,000 - 30,000 stadium expansions after several years displacing some of the bigger clus such as Deportivo, Real Betis, Valencia etc in my saves.
Perhaps something to do with the spread of very good 'Fred' regens not just at the traditional big clubs or the clubs not replacing players with like for like ability therefore a gradual lowering in standard resulting in relegation?

No new stadiums, no more than 10,000 capacity increases. But all of them have huge loans (Dortmund 104M I guess, for example)
