Welling were 15th in the Conference South when I took them over, two days to go before an away game against Eastbourne Borough, who the previous manager had led the team to a 2-1 replay win in the 3rd qualifying round of the FA Trophy less than a month before.
I promoted a couple of reserves, dumped three players back to the U-18s, and gave my Scottish SC a start for the first time in 16 games.
It worked, we won 4-0.
The season had a good feel to it, we did not to shabbily in the league, eventually finishing 3rd, but losing out to Maidenhead in the semi finals of the playoff.
FA Trophy we managed to get to the 3rd round, where we lost out in a hard fought game 3-2 away from home.
Blinkin' 'eck, I just realised I haven't updated for three seasons
Shows how much I've been "enjoying" it...
Anyways, shortened version, this season we managed to finish 6th in the Conference, just missing out on the playoffs.
Best we managed in the Cups was the semi-final of the FA Trophy, to bleedin' Maidenhead, but the board seem to be okay with the cup performances and they seem to think we've consolidated our place in the Conference, which is what they and the fans wanted.
Maidenhead have been a bit of a bogey team, we've only managed to draw with them once in 12 games, including cup and playoff games.
Two players of note, who I hope we can keep hold of...young Welsh fella, MC, who the AssMan rates as one of the best prospects of recent years, and a young Norn Iron D/WBL found by our scout who's hovering on the brink of a first team stretch, both 17.
