Newcastle are being strongly linked with a move for Croatia star Luka Modric.
Modric is one of the most sought-after players in Europe with the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham and Barcelona all credited with an interest in the Dinamo Zagreb schemer.
However, reports suggest Newcastle have stolen a march on their rivals by inviting Modric to Tyneside for talks and a visit to the club's training ground.
Modric is believed to have met with football executive director Dennis Wise and head of player recruitment Tony Jimenez with Newcastle thought to be ready to pay £20million.
Croatia manager Slaven Bilic has backed Newcastle United in their reported interest in Dinamo Zagreb star Luka Modric.
Modric is rumoured to be attracting the interest of a number of top European clubs, however reports claim Newcastle are leading the race to secure his services this summer.
Bilic has tipped The Magpies to land the sought-after schemer, insisting the St James' Park club would suit the Croatia international.
"Newcastle are a big club and I believe a move there would suit Luka," Bilic said in the Daily Star.
"They are the next club underneath the 'big four', on a level with Tottenham but they are stronger financially than them.
"And I think they can do bigger things because of this."
I always bought Luka Modric on the FM series and every time I thought it was a good buy. But to be honest Newcastle needs to focus on the defence because this year Man Utd scored 11 goals against the Geordies. No offence micmania1.
