i am trying to use the editor but every time i go to load the database it keeps saying that the file client_db is read only and can't be opened for editing

You need to go to C:/Program Files/Sports Interactive/Football Manager 2006/data/db and right-click on client_db.Scroll down to Properties on the menu that appears and left click.

At the bottom of the window that appears, you'll have three options. Make sure that Archive is the only one that is ticked and then click Apply and OK.
Now try to load your database.

it hasn't got an archive box its only got read only and hidden and neither of them are ticked

first off backup the file (to client_db.bak for example). check to see is the parent directory isn't hidden/read only.
if that still doesn't help try setting the file to read only & then setting it back to normal (all hail the great operating system).

For future reference please try to give your threads appropriate names - i.e : "editor won't load client_db due to read only status - please help".
This will actually get you quicker & more apropriate responses.

it still isn't working when i try clicking read only it says access is denied

try this :
A. Make a backup
B. Copy the db file to a different folder unfer a different name.
C. delete the original
D. make sure the copy is not read only (check windows manual to see how)
E. Move & rename the copy to the correct location/name
