It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default 4-4-2 problems...

Hi there,

Having taken Cleon's advice, I've decided to ask you luverly people to help me sort out my 4-4-2 formation as I'm having a trouble. I don't want you to do the formation for me, rather I'd like to be guided to the correct conclusion(s).

Okay, I've got two formations; a home and an away one. The away formation seems to work okay, although I've only had one game in its current form (prior to this I've been tweaking like crazy!), I won the game 5-0 in pre-season.

The Home formation has been in this form for about the same amount of time, but I just don't get scoring opportunities.

Can anyone shed any light please?

Oh, and one other thing, can anyone point me in the direction of a good website that deals with the thinking of 'real life' footie formations? I'd like to have a look at one of those to help me think this through!

Thanks again!

Any chance you can list the team and player instructions? As sometimes things can be very visble just by listing them. People might be able to see straight away what the problem is

What team, league and season btw are you in?

Okay, I'm at the start of my second season in Serie c1/A and I'm playing as Venezia. The Away formation is as follows:

Team Instructions:

Mentality: 10
Creative Freedom: 7
Passing Style: 5
Tempo: 12
Width: 10
Closing Down: 10
Time Wasting: 13
Defensive Line: 13
Tackling: 10

Use Target Man and Counter Attack ticked on.

Player Instructions:

Mentality:

GK: 4
FB: 10
CD: 6
ML/R: 12
DM: 8
AM: 10
CF: 12
ST: 14

Creative Freedom

GK: 4
FB: 10
CB: 6
ML/R: 14
DM: 6
AM: 12
CF/ST: 10

Closing Down:

GK: as Team instrcutions
FB: 7
CB: 4
ML/R: 11
DM: 12
AM: 13
CF/ST: 15

Passing Style:

All as team except:

GK: 20
DM: 5
AM: 10
ST: 14

Forward Runs:

None, except ML/R often and CF/ST: Mixed.

Run With Ball:

None, except ML/R and CF/ST: Mixed

No Long Shots

Try Through Balls:

None, except DM: Mixed and AM: Often

Hold up Ball:

None, CF Only.

I think that just about covers it; my thinking about players in general is if their stats are less than 10, then make it be rare, and if it's 10-14, mixed and 15+ often.

The Home formation is very similar, but perhaps you could suggest what I should adjust in this away formation to make it a 'home' one, plus the thinking behind it?

When I get a bit fo time, I will write a bit about of how I would improve it just by looking at it.

1 thing that sticks out for me though is the team passing and the individual passing. The team is set to short, yet your players play normal to direct it seems.

Thank you for answering, but how did you arruve at these particular numbers, and why is the DM at 15? Is it just a case of fine tuning?

So, if I were to set individual passing to mixed and just adjusted the team passing would that be better?
