I'm having too much fun. The little adjustments they made are making tactic making pretty intuitive. I mean I'm using a premiership side, so I won't really know how close I am to the mark until i go LLM.
Using a good premiership side (not Utd, Arsenal or chelsea) at the start does give you a decent framework to work from, because these are players who are usually above average, but if you can get em to go on long winning streaks then you know you're doing something right.
I'm very confident the learning curve for this game is going to be shorter than 06, once people start getting used to how the AI plays.
That's about how I go about things by managing West Ham (bad excuse I know, since it's my club and all): It's really rewarding to go on a winning streak with a semi-decent side (relatively to the division) as you then know you're on to something- and vice versa.
I'm in my second season and still playing a diamond 442 with farrowed (half way) wingers). I'm still not home, but it goes something like this:
Defence: CF, CD, MENT: 6 (pretty basic stuff on individual instructions; most on mixed)
Everyone else on team: Ment: 9, DF: 12, CF 12 (except AMC who is on around 16).
Pasing and tempo: Last notch of slow, Width and CD on last notch on Mixed.
I'm about two months into my second season (finished 5th and won the UEFA cup in my first) and things are looking decent but not great. I'm still shipping too many goals (and the goals seems harder to come by- maybe a result of being taken more seriously/other sitting back?).
The balancing of the sliders seems more important than ever before (one notch either way seems to make a real and noticable difference this time around).
Still scratching my head as to how and why I'm currently struggling a bit (sooooo many factors to take into consideration).
But enjoying the game like never before tbh.
A big  from me so far. Very playable out of the box and extremely enjoyable patches or not.
Off topic: It seems like SIs servers are getting a run for their money today. What's so special about tonight anyway. If I didn't know any better I'd suspect a release date of some kind? Is there a patch out or what?
Could someone please tell me the relationship between closing down and the defensive line? Imagine the scenario of a back four with two central midfielders in front. A scenario where the two midfielders do have a barrow to the defensive mid. position and a scenario where they dont.
If I have my back four on low closing down, do I need a deep defensive line? Lots of closing down for my mids? Only when they dont have barrows? etc etc. Or should my defence be closing down a lot when my midfield is setup like X or Y? And why?
I believe someone has already done some research on this, but I still dont get it Would help a lot if someone could expand on this
With 2 MCs barrowed...i'd be guessing too much. I just a rule of thumb that says the higher up i want to play a pitch the more important is it for me to play wide. The strikers if set on medium will still close down heavily. The backs who are on low closing down will still close down the long punts. If they are on tight closing and tightmarking, they will probably lose the striker.

Depends what formation you play IMO. If you play a 4-2-3-1 you could get away with playing slow as it's such a good formation to have possesion with. However, unless you have pacy wingers and a good striker you won't benefit much as possesion doesn't equal goals unless you have the players that can carve open the defence.
4-2-3-1 is a multiple layer tactic. Has four rows of players. The three attacking midfielder position is the key design here, to be on the hole of the oppositions tactic. To fully utilise this empty space it is necessary to play quick tempo with this arrangement, to get the ball to players in these postions as they are designed not to be in closing down areas. The risk of course is spaces they leave for the oppositions attack but a highly effective tactic for counter attacking too. Just watch Valencia and how they play is completely around this phylosophy. Slow tempo will get the opposition to retreat and all the advantages of players in critical spaces would be gone.
