It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

midfield mentality is controlled by teasm instructions.apart from the dm who is normal he sits in the middle closing down/mopping up midfield plays some good passes too.
notice wingers loosing ball too easy when 1on1 tho CD 14 aswell.

I think it's also related to creative freedom. I play defensively across the board, but with CF on around 15. I'm adventurous according to my profile

I will be playing Juve for two reasons:

1) I am a Juve fan...
2) Rebuilding gives me the ability to shape the team to my vision.

Because of 2) I want to dive deeper into the tactics side of things in FM07 and I hope I will finally be able to make a really solid defensive tactic succesful. I once had a tactic in CM01/02 while being Man Utd where I ended the season with 17w-19d-2l where I had a stint of 10 consecutive 0-0 draws (I am serious).

I am thinking of going with this as my basic formation as soon as I receive the full game and can start playing

X x x x | | | | X X X | | | | | X x X x X X X X X

I will probably use 3 versions, this one + one more defensive (full backs less attacking) and one more offensive (2 strikers, no defensive midfielder or full backs turned into wide midfielders).

There's definitely something in this idea that CF & Tempo should be set the same.

I've just tried out my formation (4-4-2) that I was beginning to get some decent performances from. Took all CF player instructions off and used only team instructions to control craetivity. Set CF & Tempo at 15 and my team suddenly took on a new lease of life!

Before this, I had been having games that were mainly concentrated in the centre of the park, with a very solid defence, yet very few real chances. Had managed to get a couple of 1-0 wins. Never scored more than a single goal in any game.

With the new setup, I've just scored 7 in the two matches I've used it!! (one home and one away, with some small changes as the game progressed.)
My team now move the ball around quickly , although not very accurately because I have no player with Passing stat higher than 10. The unrelenting passing 'n' moving is giving my opponents nightmares and they are having to chase me down all over the pitch.
This is showing 3 main advantages.
i) The sheer number of attacking moves means that I am getting more clear scoring opportunities.
ii) Opposing players trying to close me down are getting dragged way out of position regularly, leaving gaps to exploit. (=more chances)
iii) Opposing players spend such a large percentage of their time chasing me down that, by the last 20 mins, they're all starting to show signs of fatigue, whereas, since the ball is doing most of the work for me, my players have plenty left in the tank. Number of chances/goals in final minutes of match is looking promising.

It's only two games into testing, but I've been watching on full match and generally I'm very happy.
I'll continue to test it and see what improvements and conclusions I can come up with...

Its also recommended that your passing reflects the tempo i.e slow tempo = short passing, all out attack = direct passing. This is so the passing instructions don't conflict.

A sort passing game can work well with attacking mentality though, but not as good as a direct passing game would.

I'd be concerned about giving my whole team a high creative freedom unless you're blessed with talent. At the bare minimum, I'd give my CBs low CF and possibly my DMC if he's in the Hargreaves mould (rather than a playmaker such as Carrick). I usually prefer my target forward to not come deep that often also.

I think the upturn in performance is strongly related to tempo. Very often irl a team that comes out of the blocks strongly is considered to be dominating the game and creating chances. If the tempo is set too high, I would expect the passing completion rate to suffer and perhaps there's a link to confidence? A confident team can benefit more from playing at a higher tempo, whereas low confidence would cause players to hurry in possession.

Common sense would suggest that quicker the tempo, the more direct the passing style. I don't believe there's a strong link with CF... this is more related to passing style.

I've never really had the players to effectively use Direct passing (my strikers are not very quick and couldn't head a ball if their lives depended on it.) but I am having a lot of joy with a quick tempo / short passing game, even though I don't have anyone who can pass the ball. I think maybe having all my midfield players closing down means that even when I make a wayward pass, it's likely that I'll win the ball back from the opponent anyway, either by stealing it from him, or by forcing an equally poor, hurried pass.

Although I have to admit that on '06 I followed what Cleon said religiously. I would never have played short/quick, 'cos it just wouldn't have worked. For some reason it does now...

Short/quick worked fine in 2006 for me. It has done in my Arsenal demo game too. However, high creative freedom (for my attackers) just led to them being really profligate in front of goal for me.
