It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

So half the team I guess!

So basically you had half a team ignoring most of your instructions you set them then

Well, that depends on your opinions of creative freedom really.

They always did what I told them to generally. Their individual instructions were always adhered to, and they always played the short, quick passing game I wanted.

I still think there's a lot more to creative freedom than simply "ignoring team instructions-" however in FM2007 it seems (like everything else) to have a more profound effect.

Creative freedom is allowing the players to ignore set isntructions you have set him though and use his own footballing brain, thats what CF is.

I personally think it isn't that black and white, but that's just my opinion. Anyway, it worked fine with high level players.

My point is that it seems to have a lot more of a severe effect in this version, as do most of the sliders.

I'm sticking to normal as a baseline and then adjusting it for different tactics. For instance I'm now working on a 343 where I reckon I'll need a deep defensive line..with low creative freedoms. Will let you know how it fares.

So far my diamond and 352 work on normal with loads of creative freedom upfront

Alright so far I've been playing a couple of games with Reading then playing a couple with Spurs. In all games I've tried different tactics. I imported the Diamond tactic I created for 06 and made some changes...and noticed several things...These are just some of the things that have worked nicely for me..so bear with me as I describe what i did in game...

Barrows still work...Its a beaut to watch if you get it right, when defending the boys create a bus.

So I took that in mind and started a game with Boro who kick off the season with a game against Chelsea. Chelsea had come in from handing 'pool a hiding in the Community Shield.

In my prematch intervew I said the fans are not impressed with me and I had to win em over..the players loved it..their morale was not all superb..so I took a couple of boys from the U-18 and stuck two in.

Enter the game I played a 343 again with that Trident set up..because I saw that the Barrows still worked it gave me the basis to set it up. So I thought ok fine this is what I'll do.

a. Set up a deep D line..cos its 343 you'd need them to come or you can' breach em.

b. Min creative freedom across the pitch..around 7-8

c. Mentality is really irritating..too much and the players are too far apart too little and they sit on each other..so this took some tweaking..Set the backline on low with the central DC on 2 notches lower..set the DMC on a few notches higher than the highest DC cos that was the way to set it up in the old game..and had the ML MR on MAX...the FL FR were on MAX too. with the FC on the same as ML/MR

d. Closing down..low for backline..none for MC and none for FC..high up front...thinking yeah I need an outlet.

Width a few notches above normal..thinking I need something a bit wide to get the balls down the flank..same thoughts from 06.

e. Farrows on the MC and Sarrows on the DCs..

minimal TTB, RWB on those who need to carry the ball..and tempo lowest setting of normal.

-----Game Starts----

We concede a goal after 7 mins....goal comes through the centre which means my width is too much and the CD instructions are all wrong in the centre...I make minor tweaks but narrow the width...we are still being outshot at..I decide to make major changes cos I'm playing the way I want.

A. I reduce width to lowest set of normal and increase CD for the MC and decrease mentality for the DMC..cos he was drifting so far out..the ML/MR are doing a brilliant job of holding the line on the flanks and there is good cover there...so I decrease the mentality a few notches..cos the increase in Mentality is hardly making a difference...the decrease in mentality sees them increase possession now by playing the ball around.

B. The most significant change I made was to decrease width and increase my D-Line to normal..increase closing down and then everything seemed to click...

Chelsea's chances evaporated..they had 11 in the first half but added only 4 more in the second in the end we came back and beat em 2-1.

In fact in the post match news..."tenacious display" was the description...

Barrows work really well.
D-Line needs to be adjusted to bring the front line into the game

bit of thought process missing there

Second Match Boro v Blackburn

No changes to tactic..This time I just make sure my setpieces are set up the way I normally play em. I don't wanna score a lot from em, I just don't plan on giving the AI a cheap counter...so only 1 player attacks the far post and the 4 are forward..the rest lurk and the ML MR stay back.

Game starts we start pounding Blackburn, within the first 15 mins we notch up 6 chances.. Plenty of freekicks in and around the box...I make sure my best free kick taker takes it..

5 mins later we get a free kick from right edge...hint of outside but we score since player was not interfering.

Should I or should I not increase width? I want more goals..but the pressure we are causing is good...And then it dawns on me...they are taking potshots from around the box..and they are not going in..

60 min we get another Freekick..this time left edge..goes to near post and my striker nods it home

two goals from setpieces..I may need to consider increasing width to get more goals...but we are getting plenty of crosses in...maybe in the next game.....

If anyone gets irritated with my narrative please excuse me..i can't think of any better way of expressing my impressions...and i'm trying to be as objective as possible.

And watch out for the defensive setpieces..its a load of crock..ingame tweaking has a serious side effect..i expect it to get a major rewrite in the patch
