It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

I find that the diamond also lends itself well to defending a lead with some obvious tinkering. I don't need to touch any team settings, I just substitute a striker for a DM and slot them in, leaving one up front supported by the AMC. With counter-attacking this is actually an exellent way to nick the odd goal as well.

My mission for FM07 is to sort out the instructions for the back four. I never, ever have found a system I like, and inevitably end up tweaking week after week. I also am detertmined to master the training, although my run in the demo was sadly all too familiar. With the General routine going, my guys do ok, but when I try to tailor systems for individual positions more often than not my stats plummit (with maybe the odd exception). Very frustrating.

Thanks, I had the mentality like that. I found that quick tempo means that they tend to ping the ball upfield any chance they get. I don't know if 2006 is like this, since I only played the demo, but having the tempo as slow is so far what I find can string a few passes to together in 07.

I think that player selection makes a big part. Against Man City I didn't do my homework, so I had a few mismatches in the defensive line. The played direct and I couldn't deal with the Samaras' heading until I made some changes at half time.

I'm also having ALOT of trouble keeping the ball on the ground. I have short passing maxxed out, little creativity except for my playmaker, but too many long balls were going back and forth and I was losing posession in the air. Maybe it's my mentalities?
Short passing maxed out means your players will play more of a one touch style of play, so make sure most mentalities are close to each other. One touch passing also becomes easier if you play global mentality </BLOCKQUOTE>
whoops I meant to quote this

I played a few friendlies and a Champs League Qualifier, and didn't notice anything (I watch the full match). However, in the Prem I noticed players trying to take the ball to corners, and I kept getting dispossed, so I'm now keeping on rarely

- Opps still go to the 4-2-4 in the closing minutes when they're chasing a lead, but my remedy from 06 -- a mentality around 8, keeping fullbacks back (fws on rarely), making passing more direct, and ticking counterattack -- resulted in goals for the opp two games out of three.

[B] I noticed it too, what I've been doing is putting fullback runs to rarely, lowering the entire back line closing down, and lowering winger closing down. The idea is that I want the full backs and wingers to deal with the outside left/right together, with the fullback covering and winger closing down the man. So far, I haven't concede any goals in the last few minutes. Funnily enough though, in my most recent match against Blackburn they didn't do this. Rather all the midfielders were making forward runs and trying to feed off the scraps of McCarthy in the dying minutes of the game

I meant tactics-wise. There are no new options, the engine itself has improved but there is no new way to go about playing. I will most likely still buy FM07 but I'm as happy as peach with FM06 atm.
The option to swap position now actually works - that's new compared to fm06. </BLOCKQUOTE>

It did "work"in FM06. There was only a bug when you made a sub. However if you removed swap position before making the sub there was no problem. A little niggle but nothing major tbh. </BLOCKQUOTE>
My mistake, it seemed to me it never worked. Will try this in my fm07 tactics though.

Loaded up the demo with Chelsea, just to start with the easiest side with a view to developing some tactics and then try them with weaker teams.

Chelsea seem ridiculously good, started with the default 4-4-2 attacking, put double figures past the 3 rubbish Australian/NZ teams that are pre set for friendlies, now playing some decent European teams in friendlies such as Betis and Ajax, and still winning 5-0 and 6-0 without even tweaking the tactic.

Will be interested to see what happens when the Prem games start

Three centre man, three centre man with sarrows, or two advanced wingers with a vertical arrow, or two advanced wingers with a diagonal arrow? :p </BLOCKQUOTE>

So many injuries. Too many in fact. 5 friendlies and already I have 6 first team players out from 4 weeks to 4 months. I can't be bothered...
