in reply to the original question:
just slide the notch at the far left position and then place your cursor between the mid and the far right. click once and you see the notch move once. that's 1/20 (actually it's 19 steps). the mid position is 10.

You just have to count mate
All the way to the left is 1, and then each click takes you one higher.
I agree with SMSL though that 1-20 is ridiculously excessive

SMcMSL: it's just one convention for the game's model to be accesible I guess. If they had "rarely, sometimes always", people would complain about wanting more detail available to them. Since this is a game and you can't avoid various (non-realistic) conventions in order to manage a team from your living room, I'd say it's pretty well done.

Perhaps a better way to set these instructions would be if we were able to chose either the slider (1-20) or drop down tabs with 5/6 descriptive options for each instruction.
Eg.
Closing down
- Make sure you close down the nearest player as soon as he recieves the ball (18-20)
- Close down the player most of the time, but try and keep the formation of the team (14-17)
- Close down when it seems like the best option to get the ball back (9-13)
- Close down rarely, but ensure slower players aren't given time on the ball (5-8)
- Never close down. Always keep within the formation, and allow the opposition to come forward (1-4)
There could be a few problems with this, but its a suggestion

IRL I do not say to my players "OK well you have a creative freedom of 13/20 and you have a closing down of 4/20"... That is just dumb.
It should be simply "rarely, sometimes, always". etc.
| I completely agree these settings should set the parameters and the attributes will decide how good he is.
