1) XP doesn't actually need 4GB because it's not as insanely resource hungry as Vista.
2) Unless you actually want to do something other than play FM, in which case stick with 32 bit which is
much more compatible. The 64-bit speed increase is negligable for all the hassle it gives.

Vista ships with a lot of background services running, just turn them all off and it soon peps up. Google for 'tweak vista' there's some excellent guides. (not aimed at you specifically^)
The '64 bit speed increase' thing. There isn't one. First of all, vista 64 emulates 32 bit apps and it has know memory addressing issues with that. See recent articles of Anand and Toms for more technical info.
Also, since FM is a 32 bit application, running it on a 64 bit OS would make absolutely no difference. It would still be run in 32 bit mode and slowed down by the emu element of Vista 64.
I used Vista Ultimate briefly. It lasted 2 hrs before I ditched it for XP Pro SP3.
Reasons?
1. Fonts look awful, with no option to disable the clear type/true type engine.
2. Its got horrible file copy problems, still.
3. Its ugly as sin. Aero looks like KDE 2 did in 2001. Chunky, nasty and pointless.
4. Its got loads of bugs still. See the changelog for the SP1 RC.
5. Its not 'more secure' or indeed 'faster' that XP Pro Sp3. That makes it redundant.
6. There are no DX 10 games currently that benefit from the Vista experience.
7. Its over priced. Not that I'd pay for it.
8. It still has a nasty log-off shutdown bug that means you have to reset your PC everytime you want it off.
9. DRM. I'm not even going there ..
10. Vista is such a pig Microsoft aren't even going to pretend they aren't already working on its replacement to ship fall 2009. Presumably that will be Vista Final Edition i.e the one that works.
Oh and one other thing. If you are technical at all, you will have followed the devolution of Vista as it got rushed to completion. No new filesystem etc etc etc. All gutted and stripped.
There really is no reason to move from XP Pro Sp3 to Vista and I suspect there won't be a reason to buy Vista, since its going to be deprecated within 2 years.
