Default Player / Coaches don't seem to work

I'm in the year 2015, and all the great current players are now 34/35/36, and I'd love to be able to sign some of them, partially for the experience, and partially because they could do a good job.

However, for all 35 year olds, I can only offer a coach/ass man job, even though they're not retiring yet, and their playing stats are still visible. I want to offer them a player/coach role! Am I missing something?

Also, alot of 36 year olds aren't retiring till June (I'm in September), but I'm not able to sign them at all. I'm sure loads of players at this age would be happy to give a club a chance for a year.

whats up with these? Are they just buggered, or am I missing something? I'm on 8.0.1 btw

I don't know about the first, but I can understand the second. If I was retiring from football, I wouldn't want to change my club for one season.

not even for one last payday? Players like Dublin, Claridge, Sheringham, Hartson have done it.

But if I'm not mistaken, they hadn't announced their retirement before moving. (This is from memory, so it could be wrong). Whereas, in FM, when a player says that they're retiring, it, to me at least, suggests that they are essentially retired, and just want to finish the season and stop.

Also, there could be a problem if you sign a player that's retiring, and set the transfer date for the end of the season, after they've retired. There'd be a constant future transfer waiting to happen, which could do bad things to the game.

If you offer them a ridiclous amount of money, they probably will sign for you. I've signed a couple of players who have said they are going retire at the end of the season. They probably won't put off retirement though. Also don't know about FM 08 but 05 I had Ronaldinho retire randomly in the middle of the season aged 33, which was a bit annoying as I had been quite pleased to sign him for my newly promoted Charlton.

I experienced the first problem you mentioned. With retiring players (already at the club) but they still have decent stat, they can't be offered a coach/player job. Even though after they become coach, the player stats are still present. I still have coach reports for them saying they're too old and have no future at the club.
