Default Need to give my background pic a darker shade - How?

I'm looking to replace the default background with one of my own cos let's face it, the green grass is as boring as it comes! I've tried a few different backgrounds of different colours but none of them blend in with the foreground text etc. and yer left scewing yer eyes to make out some of the stuff on the screen. I presume this is cos the background I have is too bright and I just need to give it a darker shade?
Is there any way of doing this through the game, maybe through the config files? Or will I just have to darken the shade of the picture using 3rd party software? If the latter is the case, anyone recommend some free software that would provide this?

The entry in metallic2006.xml

<pre class="ip-ubbcode-code-pre">&lt;real id="bgop" value="0.1"/&gt;</pre>

That is what you need to edit. The closer to 1.0 it gets, the darker it will make the background image.

Please don't post the same question in multiple forums, this belongs here.
