Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default Quick set-up experiment.

Can someone try out these very basic 4-4-2 templates for me? I’ve uninstalled the game as it’s simply eating too much of my time. I don’t know how they’ll work at all so I’d be intrigued to hear people’s responses.

Team Instructions

Set creative freedom to 5 (“little”).
Set closing down to 12 (“normal”).
Set defensive line to 10 (dead centre).

Individual instructions- all set to “team” unless otherwise specified:

For each individual player set “try long shots” to rarely.

Goalkeeper (GK)

Set to default goalkeeper settings, in the default menu.
Set distribution to “defender collect” if playing the short passing model.

Full-backs (RB/LB)

Mentality 10.
Closing down 15.

Centre-backs (CB)

Mentality 6.
Closing down 10.

Central Midfielders (MC)

Defence minded MC
Mentality 8.
Attack-minded
Mentality 16.

Wingers (MR/ML)

Mentality 10.

Strikers (FC/ST)

Support striker
Mentality 14.
Out-and-out goalscorer
Mentality 18.

Right, now you’ve set that up; try these combinations of team instructions depending on the style of football you wish to play.

Attacking:

Set width to wide, time-wasting to rarely.

Defensive

Exactly the opposite- apart from time-wasting. Only set this to often in the final ten minutes to defend a lead.

Short passing

Possession game. Set passing to short and tempo to slow.

Direct play

Go for goal. Quickly. Direct passing and quick tempo.

Of course it’s based on RoT mentality settings, and some of rashidi1's insights into closing down. No idea how this’ll pan out at all, but it’ll be interesting to see what happens. Holler if I’ve inevitably missed anything.

Long time no see Asmo.
This looks apathetic and interesting; in other words straight up my busy alley.
I'll give this a spin.

One question; when you say leave individual instructions on "team" unless otherwise specified, do you mean mixed across the board ?

Are you onto something genious again btw?

Hello mate- won't mention the Hammers.

I meant the team instructions for individual players. As for forward runs, run with ball etc it's up to you; the only thing I'd suggest is cutting out the long shots, as I suggested.

This is just an idea that I haven't tested- I have no idea how it'll pan out.

Cheers. I see. I've just finished setting all the basics. It's time to give the lads a few individual instructions and I'll soon be ready to test it in season three with the club you mentioned

No worries. I have been experimenting with several formations and tactics over the course of the two and a half seasons played without being completely satisfied. I'm a bit tired of all the fine-tuning and tweaking in search for the optimal combo's, so if this shows some promise, it's well worth it. I'm sure my chairman agrees too

Pass completion was poor (I target 70%) on all 4.

This did not surprise me as the ROT settings do not seem to work as well on this version. I have had more success with slider apathy and global settings.

Strangely short/slow led to less possesion than any of the other options

Cheers swash.

Very strange; not what I expected at all. I found the polar opposite of yourself, but I was a higher technical quality side (mentioning no names here for CB&C's sake ).

I found the RoT settings more effective than more global settings.

How have you set up your global/slider apathy settings then swash?
