I mean, it's bad enough the AI has an edge on set pieces, as they score alot more than I possibly can, but why do I shiver like bambu everytime I play against 10? I mean, I was winning this game 2-1, at home, and suddenly the opposition gets a man sent off when I had an attacker free one-on-one with the keeper. 10 minutes to go, and out of the blue, they score 2 goals!! I had a lot more possession, more SOG, SOT, passing %, crossing %... I dominated their ass against 11 players... but still, when playing against 10, they score me 2 goals in 5 minutes!!
IRL, if I were playing against a team with a man down, at home, 10 minutes to the whistle and winning, I would try to push them harder, and not the opposite! Should I employ a more defensive tactic when playing against ten? Not logical, not realistic..
Hmmm, in fact not logical.
So, i believe you must consider some things about width, tempo and time wasting. Because your team is leading the score, is important to control possesion.
width - play wide
Allows your team to cover more of the pitch and opponent will have more difficult to closing down)
tempo - play slow
Allows your team to keep ball moving until an opportunity presents itself.
Time wasting - set it high
Maybe opponent AI playing at high tempo (loosing 2-1) so you need to break up their flow of play.
Slow tempo + width = stretching the opposition, using that extra man as much as possible. More time wasting allows you to wait for the opportunity to strike, as long as it isn't so high that your players interpret that as your wanting to run out the clock and settle for the draw. Ratchet up the mentality a bit (1-2 points), but I wouldn't change creative freedom at all - you still don't want to give them too much unless you do normally, because you might get caught out of position and hit on the counter-attack.
