I have been mucking about with a formation much like this. Have you tried the things I mentioned in the thread "Creating Effective Tactics"
In my tactic I have been disappointed with several things with respect to the match engine:

1. The match engine AI almost always passes to a dot, which makes the attacking side of this formation very hard to enhance.

2. Defensively, I have found that taking off the farrows and putting a farrow on the MC to be far more effective. If you make the mentality of the ML/MR defensive to normal and you take off FWR, he holds his position and plays the ball to the wings.He does not venture too far forward and the defensive end holds up.The crucial challenge in this formation is to make the MC and the DMC work as a pair. Ideally you want either one of them to win the ball and the other to distibute it to the flanks.

If you drop the ML/MR to wingbacks the tactic fails, because then your mids drop too deep. You don't need to barrow them either.

Closing down instructions are very critical in this formation as well, there are several ways to approach this and I have already covered them in that thread.

In this kind of formation, the ML/MR almost always have to be players who can either play as DM or MC. The players must have anticipation, OTB, pace, jumping and tackling. This player also needs good decisions and passng, which makes it a tough tactic for a non-league side, but atm that's who I'm trying to create it for.

A few years ago I created a tactic called Scramjet, which was very similar to this, and it was a very attacking tactic which was based on the same principles I speak bout. At present I've been trying to recreate it and I think that the attacking side of it still hasn't worked out as well as I would have hoped. But I'm still trying and I think when the patch comes out, quite a few of the match engine bugs that have almost caused me to smash my laptop will be fixed.

i have read your thread on creating tactics. very interesting read. I think to be successful you need about 4-5 tactics that all players are compentent at playing. here is where i believe that most good tactics fall down because as you change your tactic it takes a few matches for your players to play the new tactic successfully. i don't understand the tactical side of things really well so small changes don't work too well for me. this is why i think a formation change is best when things are looking bad

One thing I have to admit..it may be better to leave these kind of tactics on the backburner for while till the patch comes out. A tactic like this needs a lot of good movement and I don't really see it happening now, there are far too many match engine bugs now.

Ok, I have now gotten an idea that I need specific players in each position. I need AML/AMR with a tackling rating of at least 12. maybe a few other stats but i will check up on that. I tried the tactic with Man U and i was really suprised when ronaldo didn't get a rating above 5! Time to play with some players i think

In this version of 2007 I've noticed that you can play players out of position, but if you notice that a player is generating 5's, it could be more than having the wrong player there; the position could need tweaking. That's what I did and the numbers shot up in the next game

Personally i think ronaldo was the wrong player. not a good tackler at all and when i have a barrow on him back to WBR i reckon he needs to be a decent tackler at least
