Sabbath is infamous around these parts
Default Eng/UK work permit rant

I signed a player from a Scottish club, i think he was African, but he still needed to gain English nationality before i could play him in my squad. Fair enough i thought. As i had signed him from a Scottish team i figured this wouldn't take long as Scotland and England come under the same UK government and work permit/visas make no distinction between which country you work in in real life. But of course this wasn't the case in game (how stupid of me to think so), and now after him only needing to reside in Scotland another 100 days or so he now needs to reside in England for 1800 (or whatever it is). I know the UK is probably the one example where multiple countries operate under a unified visa system, but i still think this is ridiculous. I can understand that if he were young and had no previous international career how long he had lived in a country would make a big difference, he would need to live in Scotland 3/5 years (not sure sorry) before he could play for them internationally, but he would still get British citizenship regardless of the country he resided and worked in.

I think a distinction needs to be created in game (/in FM09) between citizenship and nationality. Obviously this distinction is irrelevant for most leagues but for England, Scotland etc. it can cause problems.

Any ideas? Or do you all think i'm talkming rubbish?

If possible loan him to a Scottish side. I have had the same problem the other way around and had to loan back to an English side.

Yeah i would have liked to have done that, unfortunately i have no affiliation with any Scottish teams, and no one is willing to take him on loan whilst he doesn't have a work permit. I have links with Northern Irish teams and welsh teams, but no Scottish ones.

I think it would be too difficult. I mean, if he did complete his work permit following spells in both England and Scotland, which nationality would he take? Probably, since the two countries have two different football teams, the way that would make most sense to code is the way it works at the moment. Introducing a Great Britain visa system would be more complicated to understand than the current system, so, unfortunately, you'll have to stick to the England/Scotland/Wales/N. Ireland all being different countries system.

As long as you consider them as being different countries in the game, even if not in real life, it should prevent you making the same mistake again.

But nice rant. I do like a good rant.

The first thing I would do is go back to your board and ask then for another feeder. Hopefully they'll get you a scottish one.

Perhaps SI should go back to the agents that they talked to while they were developing the current game and ask them how exactly clubs get around the wp issues because there is bound to be a few sneaky things that they do thats not in the game. I know that people will say that they wont be able to do anything that would cause legal issues and obviously this is true but if there is other corners that can be cut that is done irl then I see no reason why they cant be included in the game.

I wonder if they could do something like a UK work permit to play anywhere in UK, but also add in the Nationality for the Country he's eligable to play in.

Like say he plays in England. He'd have to wait the years for English nationality, but his work permit would allow him to play anywhere in UK.

work permit only cover one club. when he moves, regardless which club it is, he needs a new work permit, because it's a different job

err not quite true. If you sign a brazilian with 100 days left for citizenship for a spanish club from a spanish club then you won't have to start over with 300+ days but continue on the 100 days. It's basically a country thing.
