Default 8.0.2 - Still have to manually put config file in update folder...

There are still problems with the game picking up skin files that the 8.0.2 patch updates. The 8.0.2 data folder takes priority over any files you have in a skin.

e.g. fm colours.xml won't have any effect to a skin because it's in the update.

Placing the 'dont_scan dont_recurse' config.xml file in the 8.0.2 data folder solves this but surely that means all of the 8.0.2. fmf files don't get read by the game so some issues won't be solved. Plus it means skin users having to mess around with program files to get their skin owrking properly.

I seem to remeber Ter saying something about resource handling being improved in this version when this issue cropped up in 8.0.1 but it doesn't look like it has been.

Hmm. You are indeed correct. What you need to do is put the "config.xml" file in (FM08 installation folder)/data/updates/ folder (not (FM08 installation)/data/), then reload the skin without caching and it should work as expected.

Yeah, that's what I'd said. It's the same as it was with 8.0.1

My concerns were:

1. Placing that file in there I presume tells the game not to use those files. Is that the case? Skins work but any changes to skin files in the patch wouldn't work.

2. It's not great in terms of distributing skins. The fmf system and more use of a user data folder was supposed to keep end users out of the game files and make things less complicated. At least once now they'll have to dig around in program files to put the config in the right place.

Is there no better way around this; Something that could be included within a packaged skin? Hopefully now you're aware of it I can consider it something that'll be looked at.

I took '8.0.2 data folder' to mean:
<LI> [FM08 Install Folder]/data/updates/update-802/data/

I wanted to point out that the config.xml file should put in:
<LI> [FM08 Install Folder]/data/updates/

If that's what you said, I apologise for repeating it, but I thought it was worth clarifying

As long as the config.xml file is in the main parent 'updates' folder, things are fine. The game works in terms of paths that are searched in a certain order. Each "update-NNN" folder inside "updates" is searched invididually, but the actual "updates" folder itself needs to be set to not being scanned further when scanning the main "data" folder.

Absolutely. The config.xml file should be installed by the patch installer, but we appear to have missed it out.

Unfortunately the only way for this to be fixed is for the config.xml file to be present - and there is no way to do this in a packaged skin.

It has already been fixed in-house (pending some testing).

Thanks for pointing it out, it's something we should have caught ourselves during testing, but unfortunately it slipped through.

Yeah sorry I should have been more obvious and I get what's going on now with the config file.

Any chance of it being fixed as part of the re-issued patch I've read about with the whole jermaine defoe problem etc?

Is this why none of the Lower League England logos from the original graphics are not showing now?

And stick the xml file that shows up in the skins folder to:

C:/Program Files/Sports Interactive/Football Manager 2008/Data/Updates

I'd think so if they are included in the patch.

Put a copy of the xml file from the skin folder where you've said and see if it changes anything.

Boah: Could you answer two stupid questions from a skinning newbie:

1. The config file you talking about what should be written in it?

2. Re-issued patch, does this mean there will be a fix for the 8.0.2 patch that makes this config.xml outdated?
