First off, have you installed the patches? Cause if you have you should be asked whether to use "default", "8.01" or "8.02" databases even if you didnt have any custom made ones.
If you have not installed any patches open your Windows Explorer and go to /<username>/documents/Sports Interactive/Football Manager 2008/db/. (<username> is whatever you use to logon to Windows, like "ricksmith" mabye). This is where the databases you made yourself should be. If there's nothing there you didnt save your changes to a new database but to the default one most likely. When you make changes in the editor you have to use "save as" and enter a new name for the database for it to be saved as a new one. If not you will just overwrite the default.
If none of that works, I'm out of ideas, sorry.
Cheers.

And see if the folder is the one in your documents/... It might have been changed if you saved your games to a different folders before. If it has you have to move the databse folders in your /db/ folder to this location instead.
Cheers.
