After weeks of scrabbling around trying to shore up leaky defences and getting completely frustrated at not being able to win 2 consecutive games without being a world class side I have finally designed a half decent tactic for FM07, well in my opinion anyway.
The tactic is a flat 451 which relys on farrows and barrows to create sufficient movement in the midfield area. It involves a flat back four with the full backs stating back most of the time. Then there are 3 central midfielders, 2 have barrows into DMC position and they act as the shield for the back 4 rarely venturing forward. The 3rd MC has a farrow directing him into the AMC position and his role is to get forward as often as possible to support the lone striker. The two wide players are set as MR/ML and have farrows directing them into AMR/AML this allows them to getforward enough to support the striker and get crosses in but still leaves them deep enough to support the full backs when opposing full backs overlap. The lone strikers role is to chase balls in behind and provide an outlet for direct balls from deep.
The tactic as a whole is quite defensively minded and works on the principle of inviting teams to try and play their way through you rather than an aggressive ball winning tactic, but as a result when you get the ball back the opposition are often out of position and vulnerable to a quick break. Because of this the opposition normally have a slight advantage in terms of possesion and often have more attempts on goal, although due to the solid defence a lot of their attempts are often speculative long range efforts. The way it works is that the opposition have to come out and play to make inroads which tends to leave them open at the back to a quick counter.
The attributes i usually look for are as follows:
Fullbacks- Tackling, Positioning, Pace
Centrebacks- Strength, Jumping, Positioning, Heading, Off the ball
Defensive Midfielders- Tackling, Off the Ball, Stamina, Workrate
Attacking central midfielder- Pace, Vision, Creativity, Flair, Long Shots
Wide Players- Pace, Stamina, Creativity, Crossing
Striker- Pace, Movement, Finishing, Acceleration
I have used this tactic for nearly a full season with Bolton and am currently 4th in the league, I have only scored 42 goals in 34 games but have only conceded 18 in that period, the tactic tends to produce a lot of 1-0 wins.
I'll have an effort with the screenies tomorrow, apologies for not supplying them but as you can see from the tactic link they are really not a strong point of mine

FM07 451 with tight defence suits mediocre teams Post #6
Also by using a deep defensive line and 2 defensive minded midfielders it means the only real space for the opposition to play in are in front of the midfield which doesn't present a great deal of danger and normally results in their DM having an effort from 35 yards or their full backs pumping in crosses from deep which don't really have the angle to pose too many problems as long as your centre backs are big and good in the air [ which most are]
