How frustrating!
Every team I seem to try I just can't get it right and the inconsistency is driving me crazy!
At the moment I'm Liverpool and beat Ajax 7-0 then Man City 3-0 then loose to Bolton 2-0 and draw to Fulham 2-2! The players are going from 8 to 4 in both games. The Strikers are scoring hattricks in Europe but can't even manage more than 3 league goals in a season!
I've also had this problem with Spurs and Port Vale. I've tried more tactics than I know what to do with! I'm loosing patience! Any ideas or is it part of the game?

Unless you've done a 3 year University course in stugying Football Manger then it is part of the game. Some people can find a way around it but only a minority.

Changing loads of tactics is probably the problem.

When playing 06 or 07, consistency is key. Once I have an idea of the formation I want, I tweak my tactics over the summer to at least get them to a stage where the players do roughly what I tell them, then go into the season.

Fact is, that at the beginning of the game your club has just got a new manager, 9 times out of 10 new players and they need time to learn how to gel. Once the players have confidence in your ability and each others you can start to get more advanced and try new things.

Success straight out of the box is rare. I would never play 07 looking for success in my first season. It's not a realistic expectation. If you finish top 7 with Tottenham then you've done as well as can be expected and can move on from there.

Put simply - a tactic is not crap if you lose a couple of games. It's amazing how a settled team can perform so much better than an unsettled one. Check the Assistant Team Talk Feedback and you'll see a definite corelation between how he thinks you operate as a unit and your on-pitch results.

Worked so far with Walsall and in Italian Serie C2.

Seriously though i agree that a couple of defeats does not make a bad tactic - but i do think 8 out of 10 does. Espically for a team who the bookies regard as highly fancied.
Also it doesn't explain as to why it can be 'simply brilliant' in pre season but so poor during the season?
And as it's already been mentioned nearby, what about the opposition super keeper?
Is it right that you can get several shots on target - the oppo gets two and scores with both! In real football that can happen but in FM it happens 8 games in a row!

Having the same problem but i try to give it time to gel but i dont even get that, by the time i was getting ok, i'd been sacked by AJAX-CT and same about to happen with SWINDON. I suck but love the game. so keep going, i cant decide wether 4-5-1 or 4-4-2.

I agree the super keeper thing really fooks me off tbh, i'm tired of dominating a game and not scoring, then in the last 20mins they score GRRRRRRRRR

It's not even long shots i'm complaing about, that would be ok, no it's the chances missed INSIDE the box and even IN the 6 yard box!
Now technically we could put it down to our players lacking compusure but how come the opposition don't lack composure? Southend can get two shots and score two goals and yet my stats beat them in every department.

As you are using Liverpool, most of the teams probably all defended behind the ball and will be time wasting once they achieved the results they desired, either leading your team or a draw.

In this situation, definately, you should go all out to close down(Good Staminia, Work Rate, Tackling Generally players needed!), win the ball back and control the game, get people forward in numbers, try to edge out from set pieces.

Of course, remember to at least put one or two players good at holding up the ball with low closing down to hold possession and start to move forward again.

I figure this out after a couple of games which I watched in full during my 7 games winless slump suddenly during the December period.

They suddenly changed their approach against you. And this is the kind of play style national team uses in real life, although the play style and results ain't pretty and winning a goal or 2 via set pieces and rebounds

I've had this problem probably with every team I've tried. I've made great tactics and got some good players and still some Joe Doe scores twice and beats me in my home stadium. Now this happens a lot. Also the goalkeeper gets the mom very often in these cases. Im starting to think that either the game is flawed or that I suck as a manager. Even if it's not flawed and I don't have the necessary skills to adopt my tactics to different games I think it's too much to ask for players. I don't think the game should be enjoyable only by those who can make use of every detail. (and i believe Im a decent enough manager to win with Barca against random x, but no)

Anyway, wine off. I hope this gets some attention because I don't think it's working as intended. cheers.
