Getting your set pieces set up right could be the difference between you getting relegated or staying up or winning that cup or not, so I thought it a good idea for us to have a thread to discuss every one of the set pieces available to us.
8.0.2 has clearly changed things, the corners and free kicks are noticeably different now.
For corners I've been putting my best jumper and header on challenge GK, then the next best on attack near post, and then a striker on stand on far post, then a couple of players on attack ball from deep, one come short, one outside area and anyone else back. Go for inswingers to the 6 yard box. Seems ok, but I'm not scoring as many as some claim to be scoring from corners.
I have almost the same set-up as Law_Man and got 18 (!) goals from corners in 34 league games with Ajax (however, that was on 8.0.1), I still have to test it with the patch.
However, as I was dominating my opponents more often than not, I got more corners than most teams, which naturally also resulted in more goals. Still, 18 goals from corners is pretty great.
I'd like to discuss Throw-ins. I believe these to be just as important as Free Kicks. If my first 6 matches are anything to go by in 8.0.2 my old throw in routine from the first patch is still working as I have scored 2 goals directly resulting from a throw in to my side.
This is my current setup in a 442 diamond (for throw ins on the right:
DR - Short. THE TAKER OF THE THROW-INS.
DL - Back
DC's - Back
DMC - Short
AMC - Short
MR - Forward
ML - Forward
FCr - Forward
FCl - Lurk
My aim is to always offer a minimum of two easy passing options, in this case its the central midfielders. The third option is the one that is often used by the taker and is very effective in two different ways, and that is the near side winger down the line. The ball usually goes to him initially in a quick throw or alternatively the AMC picks the ball up Short and the opposition tends to gravitate towards the man with the ball leaving the winger in plenty of space to whip a cross in to the striker set to Forward or the winger who's tucked in from the left.
The far side striker is set to lurk outside the box to pick up on the loose balls, however it tends not to get that far down the line as the chances are created by the two scenarios above, which usually leads to a chance on goal or a corner.
The team instructions is set to Mixed to keep it varied.
I'd like to hear your ideas and setups that have brought success
I'm using the the same corner system as Law-Man pretty much but I only have one attacking from deep, my 3rd best header attacks the far post, I'm having great success with it at the moment.
I've never really gone into my throw in set up, though if your getting success from going into it I think I will have to look into it.
My current Throw-in's from either side seem totally uneffective currently, rarely does anything come of them. I'll try those settings although that's almost identicle to my corrent setup.
But like others i use challenge GK/6yd box and i score stacks of goals, either from my DMC(Attack near post) or ST(Challenge GK) I generally score a goal a game from Corners, something like a 3:5/4:5) ratio, have had several hat-tricks just from corners.
With FKs i went through a period of scoring loads from direct freekicks by the taker himself, then a patch hit(under FML, which is pretty much upto date with FM8.0.2) and now i very very very rarely score from Direct FKs
im having a field day at corners. i set my strongest player with good jumping on challenge GK and he has 9 goals already from corners a centre back too. ok i got riquelme supplying the corners but still great return. i have a player with high acceleration attack far and likewise near posts and thats it the rest are set to forward and lurk outside.
In 8.0.2, near post corner is working again.
I set my best jumper/header at "near post flick on" . Aim near post and watch him score one goal each match - its so effective now
Key is to spread out the rest of your players around the box, so you get a one on one @ near post.
1 on near post flick on, 2 attack from deep, 1 attack far post, 1 stand on far post, 1 forward, 1 outside area, 2 stay back and corner taker on default.
Ambrosini(18 jumping, 18 heading) got 9 goal so far in 13 games
I'm interested in any freekick and throwin setups people have that work....was consdering setting up a long through tactic with tall plays going forward to get the ball and then some long-shot players lurking to put it away..........will let u know if it works.
