I always wanted to restart with the patch, a long term game, but this attribute business really annoys me, so:
Can I start a game using the 8.0.1 patch and then upgrade to 8.0.2 about halfway through the first season, thereby preserving all players stats while fixing the game? Would this work?
no that wouldnt work. once you start a game with a database thats the db that you run through the game from start to finish if u changed it then it wud be silly and change all the players jus wouldnt work
well i've started again with 8.0.1. , getting over the attributes being so bad is just not working out for me. I've noticed that a few teams haven't got it that bad with the stats though, at least they haven't been so drastically decreased : Barcelona, Chelsea, Arsenal and i think Inter also look pretty well.

Whilst this is probably true, I can live with it no problems at all as it'll just take getting used to. Not many people have thought about the new players that will have drastically improved to take the places of those people who are constantly bought over and over. Should make a nice change seeing who's the best now tbh.
i agree with you, but the thing is it doesn't change much because it's not just the good players who have had the stats reduced, all it does is mess around with your judgement, coz i'm having some real trouble to figure out who's good and who's bad lol.

Yes, I think that should work. I think that patch is supposed to work even in your current save as far as the game engine goes. But all the players attributes will remain the same as they were in the previous patch. Not 100% sure though.
Somebody should tell SI to come up with only the major gameplay changes and just add the new players that've been given a -10 or -9 PA and just leave it at that.
Can tell me if the long shots and free kicks actually go in once in a while on the new patch? Only just looked at a few players and not played any games yet. Anybody know??
Well, I'm glad, because I'm going to sort out this whole patch business soon with a reinstall.
Anyway, yes, long shots and free kicks do go in a lot. I started a "dummy" game with Barcelona to test out the match engine, and first notes are:
-Many games are high scoring
-Fewer chances made
-More chances made into goals not misses
-More direct free kicks scored
-More long shots scored
-Rounding the keeper actually works now
-The AI converts a high percentage of their chances
That's about all I've noticed after about 25 games in charge (on match engine anyway).
