How does one get the large icons from OS X and get'em into photoshop?

Two ways, both involving getting around OS X's objections But most of the Aqua graphics are just pdf files generated by Photoshop, so they're easy to open if you know where they are and bypass the normal OS X.

Way one: Easier, less intimidating:
Start up from OS 9, so OS X won't bother you about this. Launch Photoshop, Cmd-O, and navigate to: System > Library > Core Services > Dock.app>Contents>Resources folder on the OS X disk. Poke around there; there are a number of files that Photoshop can open.

Important caveat: Work on a copy of the file, always! If you want to hack your system, you can save the new file under the same name. If you do, you will hack the system. Don't wanna do that? Simply save the copy under a different name, in a different location (Like your Home folder)

Way two: Scarier, geeky, Unix-oriented:
Log into OS X as the root user, then follow the above steps. No, I'm not going to tell you how to do that

Or you can just

1.- "show package contents" on any .app contents/Resources/something.icns and double click on that item, that will open preview.app, once tou're there go to File/Export and choose the larger icon from thumbnails and export the file as .tif (it will mantain the transparent background)... now youre ready to open it in Photoshop.

2.-For icons that are not .icns, download a shareware named Iconographer, open any icon there and save it as an .icns file and do step 1.

3.- Download a iconbuilder-plugin at www.iconfactory.com and import your icons to photoshp directly, the only thing with this plug in is that it can't import the 128X1228 icon, only 48X48 and below.

Both programs can export icons to WinXP format (Iconographer will do some wierd things) or you can go to www.xicons.com for a tut on how to use MacOSX icons on WinXP and how to use the 128X128 icons on PCs.
