Dell aren't a favoured company due to many factors, repair times can be long, they phase parts in and out very quickly, they keep prices down by using substandard parts sometimes.
You're better off making your own as it would be easier to repair/upgrade. If you can't do this I'm sure somebody studying IT at a local college would be willing to do help you for a £50 tip.
Plus the satisfaction of making your own PC is a good factor.
I have quite a good story about Dell actually, the other week my dad's mate ordered a laptop, we were helping him setup his wireless internet and router over the phone and he decided to tell us about the keyboard being messed up...
He told us the keyboard read AZERTY rather than QWERTY. This raised alarms in my head that they had sent him a French laptop and not an English one.
Overclockers.co.uk have some good, fast, premade PC's on their website though if you're desperate for something high quality.
