Hidetoshi Nakata has taken the extraordinary decision of retiring from football, Fiorentina have confirmed on Monday.
“Fiorentina communicates that Hidetoshi Nakata, after captaining Japan at the World Cup Finals in their third appearance, has brought to an end his extraordinary career, one full of success.
“Fiorentina have decided to meet Nakata’s needs by terminating his contract, which still had a year left to run, by mutual consent.”
Today’s announcement will stun the football world seeing as Nakata only turned 29-years-old in January.
The creative midfielder first arrived in Serie A back in 1998 when he was signed by Perugia from Bellmare.
Nakata spent almost two years in Umbria before netting a £10m transfer to Roma, where he won a Scudetto, in January 2000.
He subsequently moved on to Parma, Bologna and then Fiorentina in 2004 before spending last term at Bolton on loan.
