4-1-3-2. Asmodeus, wwfan El Padre et al! Assistance, please.
For over twelve months I have been trying to build a consistent and solid 4-1-3-2 tactic. This is to be based around the in game 4-1-3-2.
I have started by using the in game version and tried to improve it by having farrows up to halfway for the three midfielders.
I have used multi variations of other peoples tactics as to player instructions but nothing I have assembled proved consistently reliable over a full season. I do not want a"Super" tactic, nor do I want an out of the box tactic made for me. I would very much like just to be pointed in the general direction. I realise that I may only be one slider click away from a decent tactic but I have been working on that theory for a year now.
I try to ahere strictly to the game manual with regards to team and player instructions. That is, I will not ask players to make forward runs if their attributes say they are not up to it. I hope that this makes some little sense and that one of you can put me back on the straight and narrow. Kind regards to all.

I do not know what super nova looked like. My 4-1-3-2 is as in the drop down in game menu. All the alterations are only in the plater instructions. I have generally had the following team instructions. They remain constant.
Ok, supernova, picture the basic 4-1-3-2, then imagine a farrow from the left central midfielder going to the AML position, likewise with the right central midfielder to the AMR and the central central midfielder to the AMC.
I've found that any formations like that don't work anymore as it leaves too big a gap between midfield and defence.
although playing a diamond with the ML & MR with farrows to AML & AMR is essentially the same seems to work well........ weird

I'd definitely have your attacking players on a higher mentality than 10.
10 means that they'll defend and attack where needed. But they won't defend as intensely as a player who has 6 for mentality, and they wont attack as much as someone who has 15 for mentality.
I'd try spreading mentalities out across the team individually to players, but don't give mentality values too much of a gap between your players as they'll lose cohesion.
For example, if you gave your central defenders a mentality of 7, give your full backs 9 or 10. your central midfielders want to be on no more than 14 really, but i wouldn't give them any less than 12 or 13 either

Much appreciated Noel. I have noticed that invariably, I concede the midfield in most matches. I did have some success in FM06 using one of the 4-3-3 systems at home and making it one of the 4-5-1 systems away. I may revert to those. Your time trying to assist has been appreciated.

Thanks to wwfan and Asmodeus. I have just now written down your comments and will put them to use after my tea. I would say though, that I have Hull City up to fourth in the Championship after 20games in the first season. But I do concede too many goals. I have also brought in only one player, a G.K. Mark Crossley. Kind regards.

Tactics aside, one really important thing is having a GK with good communication. If your goalkeeper cant organise his defence you're always going to concede goals!
