i just wondered if any one could give me the link for a guide to the mls? i did do a search but the only one i could find needed me to sign up to something to download one and i cant be bothered doing that right now! a link to read it off a website would be best rather than a link to a download.
Just had a quick search and found this. I've read through it and it seems pretty good! I tried an MLS game before and it was a bit confusing - wish I'd had a read through of this first.
thanks. there were only really 3 areas i didnt understand and thats probally because i dont know anything about other american sports and they were: the waiver, draft and salary cap.
MLS is a lot of fun to play, because the player movement rules are varied and challenging - a hybrid of player movement rules in Europe (transfer method) and those used in major US sports (trade/draft method).
The biggest problem in MLS is that each season you play, the incoming draft pool gets weaker and weaker, so that it soon becomes impossible to find quality players who qualify for developmental contracts, and because of roster limits, you really need to have some contributing players on developmental contracts.
There are other minor issues - it is not possible to structure a trade with multiple players on both sides, or to offer a player for a draft pick. Although irritating (and in need of improvement), these don't make the game unplayable. But the draft pool issue is a major problem.
But play the MLS for a season or two - it's a lot of fun.
what i will do is keep my nationality as english and have a continental rep so i should be able to get a job back in england if i get bored. just to get this clear, if some one makes and approach to get on of my players and i say they can have a 2010 draft they basically get the choice of any regens i get in 2010?

From what I remember, I think each team gets around 4 draft picks. You can then trade one or more of these picks for players. A first round pick would be more valuable, as the best players will still be left to be picked. A fourth round pick would probably be less useful.
Not sure if this is completely accurate, but I hope it helps.

Waivers allow you to cut a player without paying off the balance of his contract. To compensate him, there is a process whereby every team in the league has a chance to claim the player before he is released from the league. Typically, the order of claim is the reverse order of the prior year's standings.
The draft is the way in which young players who have never played professionally are brought into the league. The model is the college draft for the NFL and NBA, and the junior draft for the NHL. The theory is to promote competitive balance by allowing the worst team to pick the best player.
The salary cap sets a total cap on a team's player salaries as well as a cap on individual player salaries. This is because the MLS' predecessor - the NASL - went bankrupt signing players they couldn't afford. The rule allowing an exception for each team ("The Beckham Rule") was the beginning of the end of the MLS salary cap, IMHO.

Not quite.
Sometime in January each year are when the American regens are created in small clubs meant to simulate USL teams, College teams, and others. If you are an MLS franchise, you cannot sign them to a free contract. You must wait until they enter the Draft, at which point teams have a chance at grabbing them.
In the draft, the team that finished with the worst record the preceding season gets first choice of any player in the draft, meaning if the team picks that player they receive exclusive rights to negotiating a contract with him. After that first team picks, the team that finished with the second-worst record picks next, the team with the third-worst record after that, and so on. After every team has had one pick (unless they trade their pick to another team), the second round starts where the worst team picks again.
This system is used to help balance teams, so that (along with the salary cap) one or two teams don't just buy up all the best players.
BIG WORD OF ADVICE: Since in this game draftees are generally worthless, I'd recommend trading your picks away for established players, especially if they're on developmental contracts.

That's actually a bug. MLS is getting a major fix right now with 8.0.2. Regens are weak, AI teams let go of their major players and the contract system is wacked.
