Oooo That's a toughy.
Not sure if I am to be honest. However in my experience is that if your always, giving praise all the time is actually to give them a kick up the back side and expect a performance from them.
But there are lots of factors to take into consideration if the player is new, from the youths or brought in. The saying no pressure from the get go helps.
Tell your gonna give them a rest, and actually rest them, complain about there performance name and shame 'em, hell you could warn them.
It depends if your sticking to pattern with that player, then suprise them.
Also it maybe the media comments, all of them, stay out of the media for a while. Or praise another manager or say you hate another manager they/he may feel not as pressured/in the media eye. As there gonna talk about some other team.
