In my game I'm starting to encounter more and more teams using the 4-4-2 Diamond (aka 4-1-3-2) against me. The formations have no farrow, or barrows.

My main problem is that I can't tell if they're playing defensively or attacking, so I can't seem to adjust or pick the right setup for my team when playing against this tactic.

I would appreciate any help or tips.

what formation are you using? Might have quite an impact on what to do really.

I usually try to close down (in opposition instructions) the AMC, if he is very good (dribbling, technique etc) I also use tight marking in OI

Other than that... you can only watch the game and see what works and keep adjusting game speed and/or attack/defense accordingly until you get more chances

why don't you try a 4-4-2 diamond too? You may try also 4-3-3, I'm sure you'll beat so diamond.If they play 4-4-2 diamond without farrows it mean defensive,like 4-4-2 without farrow.

I swear by 4-1-3-2 with 3 MCs. RM/LC on darrows and MC on farrows...sort of an accordion, or fan formation. Compact in the midfield in defense and good, but not great width in attack.

Just as zdobzdub says they are probably playing defensive. I use pressure, hard tackling and show weak foot on the omc in OI. The same on their winger but without hard tackling. Then I lift my winger and put short farrows on them, play it wide with high tempo and direct passing along the sidelines. this to kind of counter them when i get the ball. Playing it fast so that they dont have time to regroup. Hope it helps. Sry for my bad english.
