3 defenders are quite high up the field for my likeing, is the due to a high defence line? my defence line is currently set at normal

Could be closing down/mentality/creative freedom, I have all these pretty low with a normal d-line. Worth a shot?

It's a mixture between your defensive line and the mentality. If your defensive line is on normal, I am sure your mentality will be on normal or thereabouts also (going by the positioning of these three defenders). Providing one of them has pace though, there is no problem with them being so high up the pitch in an attacking position like this.

I thought defensive line only came into play when you are not in possession, so I would have thought that it must be a mentality issue.

No. Defensive line affects the position the players take up - both WITH and WITHOUT possession.

If your team uses a defensive mentality, a defensive setting on this D-Line slider will ensure they stay deep when the rest of your team attacks. If your team uses an attacking mentality, the effect of the D-Line slider is lessened and players will advance - although a deeper line will see them err on the side of caution a little more.

High defensive lines are prone to fast attacks. Deep defensive lines allows the opposition to play possession football more and also allows them to play to a large target man.
