Hmmm, see if Almunia is still at Arsenal. If he is, he'll probably be available on loan as he never makes the grade for No.1. In season 3, Dean Bouzanis should be pretty good by now. Check his stats out and see if you can loan him. The best thing to do is to go to every good/great club and see what Gk they have in their reserves. That one will most probably be available on loan. You can find a few great players that way.
As for defenders (I'm assuming CB's?) you can try to get Sakho, Bhoularouz (if still at Chelsea), Mancienne, Hobbs, Cathcart, Nordtveit, Tuia & Cahais (if he's moved to a big club) on loan. Again, do what I said above and check around in every good/great club and you'll find a few.
