Opening Champions League game in my third season at Upton Park. My Hammers against the mighty Barcelona..
I muller them first half but the usually brilliant Briand only gets one despite a hatful of chances. Late in the half Eto dives and gets a yellow card.
Barca have woken up second half but I'm defending bravely. Eto then goes in late on Parker. Yes, surely Barca down to 10.. Er, no a mere lecture from the Referee.
Moments later he scores when he shouldn't be on the park.
However, the Hammers rally and Briand nets his second. New signing Michael Owen then wastes several chances on his way to another rating of 6 (I thought he was meant to be good in this game?) but the home side still hold firm.
Only 3 minutes of stoppage time...... In the 95th minute Ronahldinho nets and it finishes 2-2...
I then slag off the Referee post match but the FA stay silent because replays show it wasn't a penalty.
Now SI,,, I know things like this happen in real life but it's a game!! It's hard enough beating Bracelona without the damn Match Engine ganging up on you as well.
There are so many incidents in a season that go against you and not enough that go for you..
Sometimes they go for you, sometimes against you, that's the beauty of football, one minute you are elated the next minute you are cursing and banging your fists in frustration.
As Redknapp said after the Bolton game, they probably didn't deserve to win but that's football, then mentioned that the previous season they battered Bolton and lost 1-0, these things happen in football, get used to it.
When managing Rangers once in the 2nd last game of the season I had to play Celtic, I was 1 point clear in the league.
Went down to 10 men and they scored the penalty. Then just before half time we scored an offside goal to put the title back into our hands and then proceeded to clinch the title that day after scoring from a corner. Referee changed the game in our favour that day and what a brilliant occasion and situation for it to happen in!
So yeah sometimes you get annoyed with decisions but sometimes they can work in your favour.
