What has been your biggest turnover in terms of playing staff in a pre-season? How many of your old players survived the clearance sale and how many new players were brought in?
My current Rosenborg team in my first season currently has only 9 of the original first team squad still playing for the club.
I haven't quite started the season yet but so far I have signed 17 new players for a total of 5.5m pounds.
Buying and selling are fun but the game has often made it clear that wholesale changes to your first team squad will have a large effect on their effectiveness and ability to win in the first season so there is a middle ground.
Out of a first team squad of say 25, I will rarely change any more than 5 or 6 per season.

I play as Rosenborg and I don't see the big need to gut. I've won like 4 CL now with some of those home grown guys. Of course less and less as the cash flow increases but off the bat they were very solid.

Thing is though I prefer to use homegrown players from the country I am playing in - so at Rosenborg I have sold all my foreign players and replaced them all with Norweigans.
Also I prefer all my players to have determination, teamwork, workrate, stamina and natural fitness of 12 or over in their attributes.
For the 2 reasons above, that is why there has been a large turnover in just 1 pre-season in my Rosenborg game.
I always aim for homegrown players under 24 so every season I sell off the old hands and bring in youth. It also means I buy foreign players as stop gaps until the homegrown talent is available, so the foreigners end up getting sold on despite their qualities.
Think my biggest overhaul was 28 players bought in one season and 25 sold (including releases).
