Is there a meaning of retaining nation players from a league you have chosen to run, e.g. retain players of english nationality when you run english leagues?

Nah... it's a way of including players from other countries without having to actually include the leagues.

I like to play the Scottish league only and sign the cheap Scandinavians but unless Large DB is on, there's only 2 or 3 from each club. RETAIN PLAYERS lets me only select Scottish league on Medium DB but still have all the Danish, Norwegian, Finnish and Swedish (and English) players to choose from.

I love it.

Sorry everyone for upping this rather old(ish) thread, but I'm dying to find something out instead of spending hours with no outcome eventually.

The thing is, I'd love to give some 60-70 nations a "retain players" order. Including about 40-45 European nations, about 10 South American, 10 African, some Asian and a few North American plus 2 Oceanian nations (Aus and Nzl).

So, question to people who've tried it. What side of a database should I use? I'm playing FM 2005, I loaded a game up with large database, it loaded about an hour and a half, then I got sick of it, and closed it.

I only want one league (the Estonian league, that I created on my own, and that I enjoy playing a lot) to load up, but with lots of foreign players to choose from...

Could small database be enough? Will the game load up all the players (=all the clubs they're in?) I wanted to retain even with small database?

The retain players command work regardless of the database size you have chosen.

So, if you choose the Estonian League + small database + retain all Brazilian players (for instance) then all Brazilian players will be retained.

Yes, that is true. Thanks for clearing that up!

I tried to retain some 70 nations, the game loaded up in 2 and a half hours, then when I continue, it processed until it was too much to bare, so I closed the game.

So if anyone else has a question like I did, I hope he/she can find this post and get an answer and save him/herself at least some time.
