By 1) Using a ddtfile containing the country you want to manage; 2) While adding a manager (after loading the game) going into the nation's team screen and selecting "take control"

What does this retain nation player do, could one explain in simpleton terms please.

It retains all players from the countries you put in your ddt file, no matter the database size you select.

but if you have all of them in with a small database isn't it just as large as a large database?

It's probably larger than the large database.

Not really no. A large database will load lots more players. I wouldn't recommend putting in all countries.
As an example, I'm playing with Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico leagues. Medium database. And a ddt file that retain any player from the American continents. Europe isn't doesn't have a lot of players in my save, but then I don't need them to have many as I'm only playing in South/Central America

If I make a ddt file with all nations, why doesn't work it in the game. There are only 3 players in a Belgian Club for example...

Have you followed the following instructions??
1. Open Notepad
2. Type "Retain_Nation_Players" "(country)" for each of the countries you want to have all players for.
3. Go to "Save As", type name of file to whatever you want. Make sure the "Save as type" is set to "All Files". Then press Save.
4. Open CM03/04. Go to Edit Preferences. Open the DDT File section at bottom. Make sure that the box is ticked next to whatever you saved the notepad file as.
5. Start new game.
NOTE: YOU MUST HAVE THE LATEST PATCH INSTALLED FOR THIS COMMAND TO WORK!!!
