I have been playing as Everton with average success, using my own tactics. I can run around 10th/11th all season with the odd 10 games unbeaten/without winning.
My main problem is that I concede so many goals (Average about 2 per game) from inocuous crosses. Situations where their wide midfielder, who is marked just plays a diagonal ball into the area, to be met by their striker, who is marked and they score. I've got my centre backs on tight man marking and my midfielders on zonal.
It just seems so frustrating as you aren't getting any feedback from the 2d mode. It's not like there is something I can spot there and change. The crosser is marked and the striker is marked, yet they score with almost monotonous regularity. My CD's are the likes of Yobo and Lescott so they are no mugs in the air.
Any suggestions, other than to buy better players?
A common problem in FM. Personally I think that the match engine is too "good" with this situation. There seem few or none ways for us to do the same.
My best tip is to employ Right & Left midfielders. Whenever I play any other formation, like a 4-3-3 without these, I struggle real bad. Don't have more than 5 or 6 in Closing down on your CD's, a bit more on your Fullbacks, so your DC's dont get dragged out of position. Also experiment with Thight Marking & Man Mark on your Fullbacks & wingers, zonal on your DC's.
Train your Defs in Aerobics and keep a look at their heading training report.
Also tight marking will not work against all opponents. If your DEFs closing down is two high, it is probable that they leave their mark to go towards the man with the ball and then when the ball is crossed, the targetman will be free to make a header.
Believe the problem could be that there is a bug in the marking. If you ask one of your defenders to mark the striker, you should double check whether it really is saved. I have noted that this doesn't happen all the time...
What i did, and it seems to have cut out a lot of these type of goals is putting your defenders on little creativity, that way they dont go out of postion and do what they are told basically.
If you a DMC, do that to him also. In fact nearly all my team has little creativity.
