Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default A tactic for anyone struggling with Barcelona

First and foremost I should mention this is a tactic for a technically skilled team like Barcelona. It should work well with other very good sides but this is not a tactic for weak teams. However the philosophies of the individual setup is universial and should be applied to all tactics.

The formation is a 4-1-2-1-3. It is a very attacking oriented tactic with the emphasis on scoring lots of goals. You will likely concede a goal in away games but in turn you will score 3 or 4 so thats ok.

Setup: four defenders - give the central defence low closing down and direct passing so they get the ball out quickly also zonal defence.

Fullbacks are on high closing down in zonal area so that crosses can be neutralised.

DMC: more defense minded and will act as a link between defense and midfield.

MC - Deco is one and he is set up as the playmaker. He decides what will happen and so his mentality can be around 15. The other MC is 16 mentality too and should look to get forward more often and join the attack.

AMC - Ronaldinho - Give him a free role and high creativity, maxed out for attack and long range shots. His closing down can be high to force errors but his tackling is easy because he is all about putting the fear of god into defenders.

St- Eto'o and whoever else you have. High closing down and high mentality. Eto'o in particular get much creativity.

IMPORTANT: This is the key thing you must always do to maintain your sides playing well: At the start of the season pick your starting side and individually figure out their instructions.

Look at their attributes and see what they are good at... in particular:

Crossing: Anyone 15 or above is on high. Anyone below is on rarely.

Longshots: 15 or above on often. 13-14 on mixed and the rest on rarely.

Run with ball - 15 or above for dribbling should be often. 13-14 mixed. under that rarely. This means Deco for example won't run with the ball much but since he is an awesome passer he will find players moving forward easily.

Forward runs - if they are good at crossing or have high pace and acceleration then give them often for this. If they are defenders or good passers then don't.

Through balls - players with high creativity and passing should have this on often.

Set pieces: Corners... have your best header attack the goal keeper and your second best to attack near post. Three best players with off the ball skills should attack the ball from deep at they will lost thier markers more easily. One player should stand short as an option for the corner taker to pass to. This player should have good crossing as he can pick out your tall players. Anyone else in the team is lurking outside the area. Corners in can be mixed since Ronaldinho will be highly creative and makes good decisions so let him.

Thats it in a nut shell. I know I am not giving you exact settings but no good tactic can in my opinion. Every good tactic has to be tweaked to fit the players in it. If you give players the right individual instructions it will make all the difference in the world. This is true of any tactic. Spend some time with your starting lineup and set their instructions according to the strengths and weaknesses as I have outlined above. If you need to make a substitution in the game take a minute to set new individual instructions for the oncoming player. He may not be as good at passing for runnning as the player before him so you need to tweak to suit him.

This is the secret of playing well and winning.

Please give me some feedback and let me know if any of this is useful. Also if you think you can make this tighter at the back let me know. As I said this is strong offensively but the price of that is end to end football.

I use him as cover for Ronaldinho. He still gets plenty of games just not the big ones yet... he's my long term replacement for Ronaldinho.
