It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default error ridden defenders

i play as man united and my defenders make so many mistakes in their defence that lead to shots on goals and in many cases, goals.

is it something wrong with my tactics? all my defenders play short balls, no one is told to keep the ball or run with the ball... usually these mistakes happen when they hold on the ball too long or a stupid pass back..

can this be solved in trainig or change of tactic?

i'm really upset now because i'm in 4th place, having a torrid season and on top of that i lose 1 goal almost every game through some sort of defensive error...

another question.

how come the oppositions are always able to get behind my defence? i started playing offside trap and this was happening so often i started using offside.. now that i use offside, it still happens.. my defenders are caught off positions very regularly without a particular reason..

this is Ferdinand and Vidic we are talking about.. not some average League 1 players... i'm caught napping by Sheffield United, got beat at home by Reading.. torn apart home and away by Arsenal and Liverpool.. most of the goals they score come from my defensive error or being caught off positions and giving them such open spaces they cannot miss..

sorry, cannot go to edit my post, so have to write new one. what i tried to say was i never used offside, until i thought it may be allowing oppositions to get behind my defence.. but now that i implemented offside, they still do.. they score the craziest of goals and many times within 10 minutes of the start of games.. is it something i'm doing wrong??

pls help.

You mean how deep they play? I usually play them very deep as my scout usually tells me to play my defence deep after scouting the oppositions.

my orders are simply. all of them play short balls, no one runs with the ball, the wingbacks make mixed forward runs. all of them play closing in all the time. i used to not close in, but i was losing so many goals i switched to closing in. this didn't seem to help much.

no creativity, very defensive minded, tight marking, man marking for the two center backs.

i usually concede goals early in the games, so i don't think it's about stamina at all.

With you having them set to short passing and very defensive mentality they will not take risks with passes forwards and will often play the ball backwards or sideways thus causing mistakes.

Try this and see if there is an improvement.
thanks a lot.. will try that to see how it goes... might be a few days before i report back though since i don't have that much time to play..

I will play a pushed up defence tbh. Deep defence, without the right instructions, often invite unneeded pressure.

But if your team mentality is not that high and the midfield players mentality is not high then a high D Line will cause problems with the defence and the midfield becoming too close together. </BLOCKQUOTE>

Like I said, the right instructions is needed. With the right instructions, a deep d-line or pushed up one can still be used to good effect. Bearing in mind that the thread starter is using Man Utd with all good players, I would play a pushed up line imo.
