I started off doing quite well at FM2007 only changing the team settings, thinking that this was just a prelude to getting into the individual settings.
Unfortunately as soon as I started to change the individual settings the consistency of performance evaporated. Occassionally you have a great game, but never a run of decent form (in my experience).
I have recently gone back to the global settings and once again the good (or slightly better than expected) times have returned.
For home games I use an attacking mentality (15), with width (15), shortish passing (8) and a slower tempo (8). I match the closing down (10) to the defensive line (10) and tick tight marking.
Away from home I use a normal mentality (13), with normal width (10) and passing (10), and increased tempo (14). I relate closing down (8) to defensive line (12) and tick tight marking and counter attack.
The above is by no means foolproof or a guarantee of success, but (for me) does appear to be efficient in terms of results against effort to play the game,
The only problem is, as soon as I tell anyone else about it, I know the system will be doomed to failure
Be good to get some feedback on the merits and pitfalls of this approach.
To be honest it makes me feel like I must be doing something wrong when I hear about the efforts that people are going to in this forum, but its currently working for me.
I have found exactly the same results as you however i have to change the basic formation every 10 or so games or i start getting mullered. I would love to see some screenshots of these really succesful tactics that people like Rashidi and Cleon seem to create because I try to take into account everything they say, spend hours on my tactic then get average results. Now i just stick to the global and hammer through as many matches as i possibly can. I think the match engine is probably the best produced by SI so far however for gamers like me it proved very hard to break down. The global tactics now have bought some enjoyment back into my game and hopefully I might actually win something soon!!!
what is your creativity and closing down and tackling set to? do you play counter attack?
Already discussed the closing down settings, but tackling and creativity are left at default/normal (11)
Please note that the object of this thread is not to suggest that this method is superior to others, as a tactician/games player I would pale in comparison to the likes of Cleon and Rashidi. To be fair the team/global settings are the result of the excellent advice that they provide.
I too use the global team settings for pretty much all it can control.
Now that the match engine is more intelligent and requires you to actually make decisions in-game I feel it's a must to set things up using the team instructions, either that or have two variations of one tactic.
Agree, and appreciate any endorsement coming from yourself.
I am currently managing Spurs and have no idea if this approach will work with other or lesser teams, but in principal it should if you can match the instructions to the abilities of the squad.
I am curently lying second in the EPL and in the semi-final of the Euro Cup, and this is despite a long winless/inconsistent period in mid-season when I started experimenting with individual settings. I must admit I went to individual settings when I suffered a dip around the 14 game mark
