So you have that all important flashy, skilful winger who is full of tricks but just exactly how do you get the best out of him.
George Best is arguably one of the most gifted footballers that the British Isles have churned out, not many people would be ranked above George Best when it came to judging talent. In his prime his used to mesmerise people by his dazzling ability and technique, there was nothing he couldn't do with a football. Michael Parkinson a very good friend of George Best's once wrote "He was quick, two-footed, beautifully balanced, He could hit long and short passes with equal precision, was swift and fearless in the tackle and he reintroduced the verb 'to dribble'. He was as imaginative and whimsical in midfield as he was economical and deadly given a chance at goal".
That to me summed George Best up perfectly, he was the absolute package and still to this day I have yet to see anyone as gifted as him in his prime. What made George Best different was he could run with the ball and he used to scare defenders as they where never quite sure just what he was going to do with the ball. He could create chances for others, score from long distance, dribble and beat a man or do some sort of trick. All of these things made him a deadly player who you needed to keep a close eye on all game long, he could be quiet all game but lose your concentration and he would certainly punish you.
Why am I talking about George Best, well the simple fact is all his skills can easily be translated to Football Manager. Even though it’s a management game all the principles are exactly the same and can easily be translated from real life onto the game. All the skills a player needs to be good in the real world are the same on FM. Players who possess the ability to run with the ball and beat their opponents can be an invaluable component in any manager’s side. If you find a player with all these skills then you really should try and hang onto them as there are not too many of them kicking around on the game.
Being able to dribble involves your player trying to beat the opponent while moving with the ball. If he runs with the ball but crosses it before he beats his opponent then this is not dribbling its just purely running with the ball. But unfortunately there is no option on the Football Manager series to separate the two, so on the game it all comes under run with the ball. However the players stats will determine if he attempts to beat an opponent or not. Speed is essential for players who you want to be able to do this, if the player is slow then he has less chance of being able to beat his man as the opposition will likely recover.
Dribbling uses mental, physical and technical attributes so if you have a good dribbler but he lacks the physical attributes then he probably will not be as good as someone who possesses both. The stats that you should look out for on a player to are;
Dribbling: The player needs a high dribbling attribute to determine if he can or cannot get past his marker. First Touch:A player with good first touch has more chance of turning his marker and making a little bit of space for himself. Technique: The player’s technical ability with the ball, so if the attribute is high his overall game play will be better. Crossing: Not essential but if you want the end product then this is a bonus. Determination: The player needs this so he shows a willing to beat his man Composure: Not essential but a player with a high composure attribute will be a lot calmer on and off the ball. Creativity: Again not essential but if you want the player to create chances then he needs this. Decisions: Important to determine when to make his move Strength:He needs to be able to stay on the ball and not get pushed off easily Pace:Needs to be fast in order to stay past his marker Balance:It can help the player stay on his feet if his marker attempts a tackle Agility:A very important attribute that all world class wingers need
First touch is extremely important for good wingers, if when recieving the ball he has his back to goal then a good first touch to set him on his way as he turns and beats his defender. If the attacker receives the ball in a tight situation where little space is available or several defenders are covering, he will need to off-balance them or trick them using different techniques. First touch and technique are what gives the player this ability.
