I have a similar problem with Robinho at Real madrid. I have 3 non eu players in my squad, but i checked Robinhos profile and he only had 5 days left until he could becom a spanish citizen. So i signed a 4th. 2 weeks later and Robinho hasnt taken citizenship so i cant give him a squad number and therefore he cant play!! IRL this surely wouldnt happen!?

its not automatically given, he has to apply for it and theres no guarantee he will consider it.
There are many reasons why people don't take up citizenship on a whim, simply because others tell them to.
Put it simply, would you take up citizenship of another country if your employer asks you too, 'for the benefit of the company'? Certainly one would have to think about it. It's not something that simple to be honest.
In Spain all players take citizenship as soon as they can in real life..
It is very important for the player and the team..
It is even in the news, like the time Ronaldinho took citizenship and media saying that Barcelona can now buy another non eu player.
Once my player was considering citizenship a month before registrations closes and I had more non eu than I can register, and he didnt take it and I didnt register him so he complained why he is not playing and I got angry with him and tried mutual termination...Eventually months later he did take it but relationship with him was ruined..
